More than just Antennas: 5G Business Models

The 5G ecosystem offers opportunities for new business models. Local, established and new market players can develop infrastructure solutions and attractive services. R&M supports them with expertise, technology, engineering and more.

Building infrastructures around the world, telecom providers are currently investing huge sums of money in 5G, the radio network of the future. Important to know: More than 5G antennas. Many new and additional background infrastructures need to be created. Only with these infrastructures will it become possible to network 5G cells and work efficiently with them.

For example, base stations need a connection to fiber optic networks. Most of these links still need to be built or expanded. Alternatively, appropriate additional capacity must be created in existing networks.

Added to this is the full FTTH rollout in parallel with the 5G rollout. Edge data centers are popping up everywhere. And they have all the necessary connections with fiber optic networks.

The whole thing has one big moment. There is certainly a growing demand for infrastructure solutions, especially at the local level. The question is: Who could fulfill this request?

Perhaps the largest mobile and telecommunications operators will be satisfied if others take part of the work and investments on site. They can rent the capacity of existing fiber optic networks instead of building their own separate networks.

Creating Value

This represents an opportunity for operators of local and regional FTTH and CATV networks. They can benefit from the 5G market. Industrial companies, property owners, data centers, media, public utilities and railways can also offer buildings, areas and their own fiber resources. They would generate additional value creation that was previously unimaginable.

New and alternative market players will surely discover their 5G capabilities. We are talking about neutral households, system integrators and business centers. They can offer even more than physical infrastructures. They can develop specialized IT, WiFi and 5G services.

Utilizing Expertise

So many possibilities. But don't forget: 5G networks are complex stuff.

There can be new challenges at each base station. Various network designs, high-frequency technology and optical fibers, as well as outdoor and indoor cabling are encountered. Those involved must constantly balance between custom and standardized installation solutions. Location, security, legal and funding issues need to be clarified. Planners and players who previously had no connection with mobile phone networks need to work together.

That's why we recommend: Don't walk the path to 5G alone! Competent advice and moderation always pay off. Choose partners who can demonstrate their expertise.

We consider development partnerships to be a great asset. For example, they can concentrate on specific connectivity solutions, applications or products.
